District 140 Students Turn In Award Winning Performances at SWIC Declamation Competition
Congratulations to the members of the Grissom Middle School Declamation team on their award winning performances at their April SWIC competition.
Grissom winners were: James Melody and Patrick Mulcahy – 2nd Place in Humorous Duet and Jacob Bedell – 3rd Place in Humorous Interpretation. Also finishing strong were Anna Boomsma in Prose; Marissa Bonareck in Verse; Umair Bhutto in Oratorical Declamation; and Alexis Knippen in Dramatic Interpretation. A special thanks goes out to manager, Courtney Szkarlat.
Declamation is a competitive speech team whereby students prepare and present performances in six different categories, including Humorous Duet Acting, Verse (Poetry) Reading, Dramatic Interpretation, Humorous Interpretation, Oratorical Declamation (Speech), and Prose Reading. Student performance pieces are three to seven minutes in length and are judged using criteria selected for each category including vocal variety, eye contact, gestures, and articulation.
Congratulations to the Grissom Declamation Team and coach, Ms. Lauren Mertens, on an exceptional year!
