School Safety Message from Superintendent Byrne

December 17, 2012

Dear Parents/Guardians,

The District 140 community was shocked and saddened to learn of the elementary school shootings that occurred last Friday in Newtown, Connecticut. Our thoughts and prayers are with the students, staff, and families who have been impacted by this tragedy.

This devastating incident is a stark reminder of the importance of our own safety and security protocols. Please know that we have many safeguards in place to protect your children. Along with restricted access to our buildings by all visitors and exterior security cameras, our schools have a Crisis Plan that is reviewed annually by local law enforcement officials and we conduct regular drills, including building lockdowns, with students and staff.

In the event of a school emergency, parents/guardians will be notified by our electronic messaging system and alerts will be posted on our website at ksd140.org. Please make sure your School Messenger account is up-to-date with your correct contact information and preferences (contactme.schoolmessenger.com).

Our District's highest priority is the safety of our students and we are committed to maintaining a secure learning environment. If you have any questions regarding school safety, please contact your building principal or one of our Central Office Administrators. We would be happy to assist you in any way possible.

Sincerely,
Michael J. Byrne, Ed.D.
Superintendent
Kirby School District 140
