| | When a school staff takes the statement "learning for all" literally — when teachers view it as a pledge to ensure the success of each student rather than as politically correct hyperbole — profound changes begin to take place. With this pledge in mind, District 140 has committed itself to developing Professional Learning Communities.
The professional learning community model flows from the assumption that the core mission of formal education is not simply to ensure that students are taught but to ensure that they learn. This simple shift — from a focus on teaching to a focus on learning — has profound implications for schools.
As an organizational arrangement, the professional learning community is seen as a powerful staff development approach and a potent strategy for school change and improvement. Thus, stakeholders at all levels of the educational system - district and school administrators, teachers, parents and local school community members - contribute to school improvement and student success.
