KSD 140 School Board Votes to Abate $3.1 Million in Local Property Taxes

April 2024 - Board of Education Update

The Kirby School District 140 Board of Education voted to abate $3.1 million in local property taxes at its March meeting. The move came after the District secured a Property Tax Relief Grant from the State of Illinois, which allowed them to reduce local property taxes and replace that revenue with state funds. The Board has plans to abate $3.1 million for two consecutive years, bringing a total of $6.2 million in property tax relief to District 140 residents.

“The decision to abate local property taxes reflects our commitment to balancing the needs of our schools with the financial well-being of taxpayers,” stated Board President Tom Martelli.

“We recognize the burden property taxes can have on families and local businesses. Through careful financial planning, we’re trying to continue providing a top-notch education for our students while lightening the financial load on our community.”
