IL State Senator Michael Hastings Visits Grissom

On Friday, December 7th, Grissom Middle School welcomed Illinois State Senator Michael Hastings, who spoke with seventh-grade students about the basic structure of Illinois government, his role as senator, and how a bill becomes a law.

His visit enhanced Social Studies lessons on the U.S. and State Constitutions and provided students with first-hand knowledge on what it means to serve your country and community. Senator Hastings engaged students in a lively debate about the lawmaking process in Illinois. During a question and answer session, students asked Senator Hastings, who is a KSD 140 Alumnus, about his political affiliations and opinions on current issues.

“Senator Hastings engaged students with humor on issues they could connect with,” stated seventh grade teacher Mary Beth Griffin. “He really brought the lesson to life.”

Elected to the Senate in 2012, Senator Hastings currently represents Illinois' 19th District and serves on the following committees: Appropriations I; Appropriations II; Financial Institutions; Insurance; Judiciary (Vice-Chairperson); State Government & Veterans Affairs; Committee of the Whole; Subcommittee on Special Issues (JU) (Sub-Chairperson).
