Technology Use & Responsibility

Learning With Technology

Kirby School District 140 provides every student with access to district-issued technology to support learning, creativity, collaboration, and the development of important digital skills.
Technology plays an important role in today's classrooms. To help ensure every student has a positive learning experience, we ask students to use their devices responsibly and care for them throughout the school year.

Together, families, students, and schools share the responsibility of helping students become safe, respectful, and responsible users of technology.

Responsible Use

District-issued devices are provided to support classroom instruction and school-related learning.

Students are expected to:

  • Use their device for educational purposes
  • Follow teacher and staff directions
  • Access approved digital learning resources
  • Use technology respectfully and responsibly

Inappropriate use, including trying to bypass district safeguards or accessing non-school content, is not permitted.

Caring for District Devices

District devices are valuable learning tools. Students can help keep them in good working condition by:

  • Carrying devices carefully
  • Charging them each evening so they are ready for school
  • Keeping devices away from food, drinks, and other potential hazards
  • Reporting any damage or technical issues as soon as possible

Taking care of devices helps ensure they remain available and reliable for every student.

Device Repair and Replacement Costs

While we understand accidents can happen, students are expected to take reasonable care of their district-issued devices. The following repair and replacement fees apply when damage exceeds normal wear and tear.

  • iPad repair/replacement for grades K-5: $85.00
  • Damaged cases for grades K-5: $85.00
  • Damaged MacBooks for grades 6-8: $85.00
  • Charging cable for all grades: $19.00
  • Charging block for all grades: $19.00

Fees are assessed for damage beyond normal wear and tear and reflect partial repair or replacement costs, not the full value of the device. Repeated or intentional damage may result in additional fees or loss of device privileges. Payments can be made through the KSD 140 School Store in the Infinite Campus Parent Portal or by other approved payment methods. Questions about fees or device repairs should be directed to your student's school.

Student Responsibility

All district-issued devices remain the property of Kirby School District 140 and are assigned to individual students.

Students are responsible for using their assigned device appropriately and taking reasonable care of it. Loss, damage, or misuse may result in repair or replacement costs, as well as possible restrictions on device use.

Digital Citizenship

Learning to use technology responsibly is an important part of every student's education.

Throughout their school experience, students learn to:

  • Communicate respectfully online
  • Protect personal and private information
  • Use technology ethically and responsibly
  • Recognize and report inappropriate or concerning online behavior
  • Make positive choices when interacting in digital environments

These skills help prepare students to be responsible digital citizens both in school and beyond.

A Partnership Between School and Home

Families play an important role in helping students develop healthy technology habits. We encourage parents and guardians to talk with their children about responsible device use, online safety, and digital citizenship.
By working together, we can help students use technology safely, responsibly, and confidently while supporting meaningful learning every day.
