Informational Meeting - Proposed New School on Existing Fernway Property

March 14

7:00 pm

Kirby School District 140 is holding an informational meeting for District families at Fernway Park Elementary School on Monday, March 14 at 7:00 pm. The District is proposing construction of a new school building on the western portion of the existing Fernway school property. If approved by voters, this new building will replace the current Fernway Park School.

Details of the project include:

  • The proposed new school will be built on the western portion of the existing Fernway school property and replace the current Fernway Park School.
  • Estimates for retrofitting and modernizing Fernway’s current infrastructure for HVAC, electrical, plumbing, data, and classrooms were approaching the cost of a new school. The Board of Education believes a new building is a better long-term solution.
  • NO ADDITIONAL TAX IMPACT.  District 140 will pay for the Fernway project entirely out of cash reserves. If voters approve this project, it will allow D140 to construct a new school building using the money we’ve already saved and earmarked for the maintenance of our facilities.
  • Voter permission is required. A question on Tuesday, June 28, 2022, Gubernatorial Primary Election ballot will ask voters for permission to construct a new school building on the existing school property.
  • If voters approve the project, Fernway students will attend school in the original building until the construction of the new facility is complete. The new school is tentatively scheduled to open in August 2024.

We hope you will consider attending this meeting to gather additional information and ask any questions you may have regarding this project. Your feedback is greatly appreciated!
